Minnesota, approximately two hours west, northwest of the Twin

found bacteria in chickens that are resistant to fluoroquinolones,
the most recently approved class of antibiotics and one that
scientists had been hoping would remain effective for along
time....the state Health Department in Minnesota found that
fluoroquinolone-resistant campylobactor had increased from 1.3
percent of cases in 1992 to 10.2 percent in 1998. The sharpest
rise began in 1996, a year after fluoroquinolones were approved
for chickens.

toward resistance. The same thing happens when farmers pump
livestock with antibiotics to promote growth.
